I am trying to add a Linksys Wireless G WPS54G Printserver to my SBS2003 network but can't see the wireless printserver. I setup the printserver according to the install instructions provided by Linksys and all works well but it doesn't connect to the wireless network. I use Infrastructure for network type and our domain name for workgroup. Has anyone been able to install this product on a SBS2003 SP1 system?

What are you connecting it to? Do you use WEP, WPA-PSK? What encryption? Did you try different channels?

From the standpoint of SBS, SBS has nothing to do with the wireless other than I assume you are using the SBS for the DHCP configuration.

Beyond that the print server doesn't get added as a any kind of account in AD, it merely appears as a NIC that can be configured with an IP that can have a printer then associated with it.

Shift your attention to the the wireless equipment only.
Setup instructions for your device can be found here:
While all Wireless G devices SHOULD be able to connect to each other, I prefer to try and stich with a single manufacturer. What kind of access point or wireless router are you trying to connect with?

I hope you find this post helpful.

Thanks for the reply Mark. My setup is as follows. SBS2003 SP1 server. Netgear Wireless access point WG302. I am trying to install a Linksys Wireless Printserver WPS54G. I setup the printserver with a IP of 192.168.0 80, Subnetmask of 255.255.255.0 and Gateway address: 192.168.0.1. I have the option of selecting Ad-Hoc or Infrastructure network type. The install instructions recommend Infrastructue if the Printserver will connect to an Access point or wireless router. I have set the Wireless Accesspoint to no security and I use MAC address access control. I have added the wireless printserver MAC address to the allowed list in the Wireless access point.
If I leave the ethernet connection attached to the wireless printserver I can Ping 192.168.0.80 but not if I remove the ethernet.
I don't know why it will not connect to the wireless network. I do not see it as a available wireless network choice in the Network Connections and the installation Wizard says the connection failed.

Configure it WITH security. For ease of use and security, I'd recommend WPA-PSK at 128Bit encryption.

You don't say if the 192.168.0.1 is the SBS server or the WAP. I belive you need to set the Gateway to be that of the SBS server not the access point.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Thanks Mark. I'll try changing the Gateway to the server IP and see what happens. Good idea. Data encryption is not required here, access restrictions are required. If someone wants to sit out in the parking lot and have the coins to purchase the required equipment and don't mind jail time and fines go ahead and ease drop. I'll try again Monday morning.

I noticed you said you could ping 192.168.0.80 (the print server) if you connected via ethernet but not if you removed the wire. Are there two NIC's for this device - one wireless and one ethernet? Do you need two IP's - one for each NIC?

Maybe I am missing something, but I hope this helps,

Jason

You should be looking at both encryption and access restriction. You don't need to worry about the eavesdropper you catch, you need to worry about the ones you DON'T.

It takes no more than a few clicks to configure WPA-PSK and type in a pass-phrase for the encryption. It just does not make sense to run the risks. You are doing your company a disservice if you maintain this mindset.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark

The device has a USB port for connecting the printer and an RJ45 port for connection to a PC to configure it to connect to the WAP.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark

Mark is right about the ethernet port and the USB port on the WPS54G Printserver. The ethernet port only stays connected until you configure the printserver then you remove it and if it connects to your wireless network you can configure it via IE and the IP address. WEP is pretty lame anyway and if anyone was really desperate they could brake into that too. I'll look into the subject further after I get this printserver problem resolved.

Well I tried changing the Gateway address to the IP address of the SBS2003 server but that didn't fix the problem. Still can't connect to the wireless network. Anyone can connect to the wireless network, if their MAC address is in the permitted list in the access point, they don't need to be a domain user. The install wizard asks for the Workgroup name and it defaults to "domain" I tried several workgroup names and the name of the domain but that didn't help either. Linksys tech support isn't much help when it comes to why it can't connect to a wireless access point. It will conect using AD-Hoc mode and selecting the proper wireless channel number but you get a error message whis says that the wireless connection is configured not to connect to computer to computer networks.

Well Bob, I've made the suggestion of connecting with security. I'll suggest one final time you give that a try.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark

Well I tried the security thing but that didn't work either so I returned it to Staples and bought a Maxtor Shared Storage 200GB drive with a USB print server and that works great.

thanks for all the help...
