I have 2 harddrives now and I am trying to access the information on my 2nd(the one i am not booted from) and when I try to go in to look at documents and what not it tells me access is denied. Both are SATA drives and I just want to move some music, pictures, video etc. But I can't get into that part of the hard drive. How can I access this information???

Thanks again!

You'll have to take ownership of the files.

To do this you need to be logged in as an Administrator.

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.

Well the thing is, I cannot boot from that Hard drive. It has a bad HAL file and i just want to move some of my information from it to the HDD im on now.

* I tried to take ownership or whatever but it still tells me it can't and that acces is denied.

Can you access any files at all on that hard drive?

This thread talks about the SubInAcl program, and also mentions the Everyone user. See if it can solve your access problem, that is, if it is related to Permissions.

You don't need to boot from drive. As you have it now, just right click on the folder that gives you the access denied, and follow the instructions.

The same applies if its the entire drive that shows that message.

Yea I got it now its just that I have to do that to every folder lol and its not a quick process....

Thanks

Okay, well I took ownership of my My Documents folder and my Shared folder and it still is not allowing me permission to them. It says to make sure the disk is not full or Write-protected and that it is not in use.........

Im clueless

Did you ever try the SubInAcl command?

Read this paragraph, "How Inheritance Affects File and Folder Permissions", in the following article.

Also I was wondering how I can get my validation key off my other hard drive so i can activate windows on this hard drive because my old hard drive doesn't boot.

What do you mean exactly by this, "get my validation key off my other hard drive so i can activate windows on this hard drive"?

OFF and OF can and do mean different things, so it can get a bit confusing to us in trying to help.

this may help with the boot problem on the second drive...or maybe not....lol
but it will help if you are having issues with the drive

START /RUN / TYPE CHKDSK "second drive letter": /R (without the quotes)

it will take a while to run

Well I dont want to buy a validation key again, so is there any way for me to find my validation key from my previous windows installation so that I can validate this windows installation?

BTW I'll be booting from this HDD.

If by "validation key" you mean the 25 digit Product Key then this should be with your XP CD, or the packaging that it came in. It may also be affixed to the Tower by way of a sticky label.

Replacement of CD or Product Keys.

To replace a CD or Product Key, you must contact PSS. To locate the appropriate phone number for your product, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

Well I built this computer so its not on the tower and I've been moving around alot lately and lost my key that I had on a piece of paper...

I called them and they got me activated!

So what exactly is this program for?

Any other neat programs that I should know about, that are helpful???

Thanks alot! You guys are so helpful!

The Belarc Advisor will give you all the information about hardware, Windows Updates, programs installed and hardware installed. It is also able to show you your Product Keys.
It is also free.

Programs helpful to what? There are tons of them out there.
