I just got a set of data. All of the specifications for the import came with it. I typed all of the Field Name, Data Type, Start,Width in to the Specs. it is 581 fields long. when the import runs it says the file is too large. This is a fixed width file.

Can can I do? I thought maybe I could wrigth a macro in Word that would all me to take the first 1000 charcters of each record and make them their own table, but not sure how to do that

There is a limit of 255 fields. I am not sure that your import can be done using macros. It may be possible to set up an intermediate table using the full 255 characters that a text field is allowed. These fields could then be broken up after import. Alternatively, you could read the data line by line (Open "File" for Reading ..., or FileSytemObject) and process the lines into a variety of tables. [ponder]

The very upper high limit is 255 fields for an access table.

Hope This Helps, PH.
