I'm unclear on how many CALs im going to need to purchase for my company. Right now there is a primary domain controller and a backup domain controller running Windows 2000 Server they are also using Active Directory services(the PDC is also running email software and the BDC has IIS hosting a website), there is also 30 workstations running Windows XP Pro. What kind of CAL do i need and how many? Do I need one for each computer, two for each computer because there is 2 servers, or less than 30 CALs depending on how many computers are going to be accessing the server at one time? Thanks

Hello,

per seat licensing means that for every workstation the will access a server you need one CAL.

30 CALS will cover all your workstations. You dont need multiple CALs for each server.

The number of CALs to purchase depends on what version on Win2k you are using.

Win server come with CALs so you only need to purchase enough to cover the rest of your workstations.

Example:
Win2k Standard comes with 5 CALs, if you have 2 licenses you already have 10 CALs and need to purchase 20 more.

Win2k Advanced Server comes with 25 CALs. If you have 2 of those will dont need any more, you have 50.

Can I mix and match Adv Server and Server CALs? IE 1 server would be running Adv Server and the other running standard Server if I had the 25 CALs from the AS and the 5 CALs for standard server would I be legit, or do they need to be all of one type?
