I need an approx date range down to the month that PCs were shipped with some flavor of Windows 98. Thanks!

That's true, and according to the chart, you'll also see that it was only available until June 30th, 2002 from Direct OEM and Retail (meaning Dell, Gateway, etc).

Is there a specific reason for knowing?

Yea, i have to estimate how many windows 98 machines we have out in the field. We unfortunately don't keep track of OSs on machines we ship.

looks like it was around 1/1/02 when we started sending out PCs with Windows 2000. Does that sound right?

The file dates on the CDs for Win98 was 5/11/98 and WinME was 6/8/2000. Should get you close.

I know that WinXP was available retail on about 10/25/01 but the file dates are 8/23/01, so there's a bit of lag between creation and available dates. Most OEMs could ship a bit earlier than Retail was sold.
