How is msblast spread?

Hello, i've read various sources online but none have told me how the virus installs itself - I mean usually its by email attachments being opened.

Someone on a different forum said that its spread by a hacker scanning IPs, then if certain ports are open they connect and upload the file onto your machine?

I havent encounted this virus and have installed the update, I am asking this question just out of technical curiosity.
