How far back? Browser Compatibility

So it's good for a browser to follow a standard, but not too strictly? Much like IE, NN, et al. do right now?

Dan

Well Konqueror/Safari is more strict than Opera on ECMAScript, HTML/XHTML and DOM.

Maybe the sarcasm in my comment didn't come out too well... ;o)

Saying "Well, I wish more browsers followed standards", then complaining about how strict one that does is, would be like saying:

"Well, I wish people didn't break the law", then complaining when you get arrested for theft.

You can't have your cake and eat it, jstreich ;o)

very new at this but get much of what you people are saying. i am trying all the time now to get my code to validate. at validator.w3.org.

concerning browsers and i am probably asking a dumb question. are there any sites like validator to check browser compatibility? rather than have all those browsers on your machine? i have ie6 and the latest mozilla(think it is 1.6). but i assume looking at my pages in just those 2 is not quite cutting it.

ty and great thread for a new guy like myself.

There was a program (cannot remember the name) that emulated every major browser, but I'm sure it itself can't have been totally devoid of quirks :p

At times I have had Opera and NS3 for testing, and even BasiliskII to emulate MacOS but it's very slow for browsers so not worth the effort if you have no other use for it.

I find that NS4 is definately worth having, at least archived. Desperately need to setup of Linux or Macintosh box for Konqueror/Safari - it's a real pain in the neck not having that browser :(

On that note, does anyone know if it's possible to launch Konqueror on Windows? I know there is a *nix API for Windows (like WINE for Linux) but I don't know how good it is.. forgot what it's called aswell :(

Currently only have the following installed..
NS4.6
Mozilla (0.9~1.0)
IE6

With a chunk of Miscrosoft's older Windows NT and 2000 source code now floating around the internet, Microsoft's first response was to advise everyone to upgrade Internet Explorer to the latest version 6.0 SP1. If only everyone would update, then your compatibility issues would be reduced in complexity.

I wonder when the day will come when you arrive at a popular site and it says, "You're using an outdated browser which is vulnerable to many security issues. You are strongly encouraged to update it. Please click on this link to install a new version from ..."

Considering the vulnerability of ie6, this cant happen for a long time!!
