How do I enable OOorg to open MS Word doucments by default? Didn't enable this at installation.

If you're using Windows, then right-click a Word file, click "Open with ..." (or whatever, my memory of Windows is rusty), select OpenOffice.org, click "Always use this program", and OK. That should do the job.

Using Windows 2000 professional. Did 'open with' method, open office org 2.4 has no icon next to it like the other applications. Clicked OK and message says "Windows cannot find soffice.exe. This program is needed for opening files of type 'DOC File'

Then instead of clicking the list item, click "other program" (or whatever it says), and navigate to soffice.exe. You'll find it in somewhere like "Program Files/OpenOffice.org".

Navigated to Program Files\OpenOffice.org2.4\Program\soffice.exe. Clicked 'OK' and message says 'This is not a WinWord97 file'.

Created and saved a writer file. It saved as .odt file and reopened ok. Problem file is .doc file.

From open office help:

Changing the Association of Microsoft Office Document Types

To change the association of Microsoft Office file name extensions to open the files either in OpenOffice.org or in Microsoft Office, using Microsoft Windows:

1.Exit OpenOffice.org and the OpenOffice.org Quickstarter.

2.Run the OpenOffice.org Setup program:
Click the Windows Start button, choose Control Panel, click Add or Remove Programs, select the OpenOffice.org 2.3 entry, click Change.

3.In the OpenOffice.org Setup, check the Modify option and click Next until you see the file types page.

4.Select or deselect the file types. Click OK and complete the OpenOffice.org Setup program.
