How does one essentially "open" a port up on the server.

Guys-

I can do it in an access-list on a router but are there measures taken on the server side to open up a port??

You have to have a program running that uses the port. If you have a software firewall on your server it may be blocking the ports you need. What is it exactly you're trying to do?

If you go to Properties page of your Network card and do Properties on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and select the Advanced button then the Options tab then properties. You will see filtering options for TCP,UDP and IP protocols. You can select what ports to filter (Open or Close). If no filtering is on then all ports are open which is a Windows default. Rember this is a hardware level (NIC Card)filter. You can also have software level filters (i.e. FIREWALL). Norton and other venders have firewalls that can filter ports. Also XP comes with a built in firewall software that can be found in the propertie pages of the NIC card.
