I've just had to re-format my hard drive and cannot find my note on how to disable the 98 logo when Windows starts up. I seem to remember that disabling this helps speed the start up process.
It has been a while since I have used 98, and I too forgot how to do this. However there is a freeware program called Beacon 5.2 which can enable you to do this. It also has some other tweaks.
When you find msdos.sys(hidden file),......
Make sure you can see it by going to Start>Settings>Folder Options>View Tab..check "show all files"...and then find the file...and right click and choose "properties' and 'uncheck' hidden, system, read only (otherwise you can't save changes)choose apply/OK.....then right click, choose "open with" and select Notepad(First make sure to Uncheck the box that says "always use this program to open files of type"...
Now you can perform/put the Logo=0 option command in and "Save".....and close file...
Make sure to put back the Read Only, Hidden, System, attributes......

These are just "my" thoughts....and should be carefully measured against other opinions....I try very hard to impart correct info at all times.
d/l link is at bottom of page if you don't have 98 (notSE/ME though) cd rom..
Under the 'boot tab' in tweakui, there's an option to "disable splash screen" during boot.....plus more powertoys to mess with and tweak your system

On Windows98, would it be only the ReadOnly attribute to be unchecked?
Starting with WindowsME, things got a little worse. I don't know how to get at the System attribute since it no longer appears on the Properties. Do you know how it's done and if it would need to be turned off in addition to turning ReadOnly off?
No: the sys attrib shouldn't need to be off if your in the GUI (meaning Windows, not DOS mode)....
Don't know in ME though....
Yes: the Read Only attribute is really the one necessary to clear in order to edit and "save" changes using the windows GUI....You see, if you do the same procedure in DOS mode you need to unclear the 'hidden' attribute as well, cause the Dir command shows no file at all)....
I guess I'm just used to always printing the instructs this way....so in DOS you'd remove "all" attrib so there's no limitations when commands are given.
As far as ME goes, don't know, except that it's ms-dos 8.0, not 7.x (win95B,98,98SE)....I would try the notepad (not DOS) method for ME....
Remember to put changes in the [Options] section........and after saving, to reset the attributes

or the simple way,
make a small black image in paint then save it as
C:\logo.sys,
but to see all the DOS loading thingys just make a bitmap bigger than the default image, MSDOS (if it was human) would say "Too big of an image so il wont use one"
