I have a Quantum Bigfoot 19.1TS hard drive, one of the big 5.25" ones. It's SMART capable, and is giving a rather dire warning advising me to backup and replace the drive.
The machine I have is a hand me down, and when I got it there were a few bad sectors.
So here's what I did...
First off, I Fdisk'd the drive. Didn't fix the problem.
I used a couple of third party pieces of software to determine the bad sectors, and then performed a bit-by-bit rewrite of the platters.
Heard of Spinrite? I ran that a couple of times over the disk after restoring the sectors and it had no problem doing an exhaustive (24hrs to do the darn test!) set of exercises and it pronounced the drive to be working fine.
I've used it for the past 6 months with no errors, no bad sectors, and nothing new going wrong with it. I just get the SMART errors during each bootup.
So now I'm using some diagnostic software to determine what SMART is saying. The "Reallocated Sector Count" is right at the threshold, causing the error to pop-up. I need to reset that, and then my disk will be golden again. It's out of warranty, but it's a good size (19.1GB) and I don't want to junk it 'cause I figure there's nothing REALLY wrong with it.
I have yet to find some software that can reset those values. I've heard that it's possible that the Partition Table in the MBR could contain the data that SMART is reading, if so, doing an fdisk /MBR should correct the problem, or leave me with a nice paperweight.
Anyone have any directions they can point me in?
Any software they can recommend?
Any other ideas?
Thanks in advance,
The Temp
