How do you log out of the Red Hat Linux 7.1 on command line?

How do you log out of the GNOME or KDE GUI interface using a command on the command-line?

logout

or (if twm is the windowmanager under it (instead of Sawfish) type the following in the root window.

exit

i guess logout would be used when logged into another computer using the terminal, and need to logout.

logout command would be of no help to logout of the KDE of GNOME session.

Or from the commandline and not an emulator... I haven't tried logout in an XTERM on a linux box... *clicked click* Ah, bash reports that you need to be in a "login shell" to logout when using it through a XTERM window...

So is there any possible way to logout via XTERM?
