I'm a newbie to voice/pbx infrastructures. My background is in data networking. We have a large organization with many buildings/pbx's. All our MAC's are done thru StationCM.

We're billed $32/per month for each line. My question is this : if a phone number is assigned to a jack it's considered "live" and we're billed for it...now let's say this jack has nothing plugged into it, we'll continue to pay for this line forever!

How do you determine if there is any actually any "voice traffic" on a line? is there some sort or report that I can run that will indicate which lines have had "zero" traffic in the past month?

thanx in advance!

As Mountainbear said you need to go out to your staff as they can provide a lot of info quickly.

E-mail the heads of department saying your doing a review of services & warn that services not detailed by them will be removed from service. Attach a spreadsheet with columns for Person using service, deck number / location ID, extension number etc.

Collate the replies onto one master sheet. Then get the telco to give you the information on all lines. Import the telco info into your master sheet.

This will leave you with lines identified and the unknowns.

For the unknowns you then have two options. One is to test and trace, the other is to either pull the jumper / patch or have the telco TOS the line and wait to see who screams.

Leave it a month or so and any that people have not screamed about can them be removed by the telco.

I've done this myself and people will tell you pretty quickly if you've taken their line out of service.
