Hello! I am a teacher who lives in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
I am having some strange behavior in my machine running windows xp sp1 since directX 9 was installed on it. I want to make sure this is the problem and for that I need to uninstall it.
So, the question is easy (I hope the answer too)
How do I uninstall directX 9 from Windows XP sp1 so I can go back to directX 8.1?
Well, I will be expecting your valuable help. Thank you very much.

German,
Click on the 'Start' button and then 'Control Panel'. Then in control panel, click 'Add or Remove programs'. After the list appears, Click on DirectX 9.0 and click 'Remove program'.
You might have to restart your computer for changes to take place.

Hello 0x4B47. The problem is that you can't uninstall directX 9 from Windows XP that way. Try it by yourself. As far as I can see it is not easy to uninstall this soft. There is no reference in Adding and Removing programs (Control Panel). Anyway, thanks for your cooperation.

Glorenzo,
After reading your post, I tried it, and I found I can uninstall directX from control panel and add remove programs. Oh hang on a second. You must be trying to uninstall the DirectX runtime components right? and not the sdk. In which case it cannot be uninstalled! You must format your harddrive to get rid of it. Microsoft warns you of this when you install the runtime components.

Hy,

It’s « normal » that you can’t uninstall DirectX : Microsoft has made this on purpose (for the same reasons about Internet Explorer ! ! !)

You have two solutions :
1) Make a manual uninstal of DirectX 9, you find a procedure, in french, at But y think with a browser you can find the same in english in Internet).
This procedure is good for Windows 2000. I think is similar for Win XP, but use it with some caution.

After re-install another DirectX (V 8.1 if you like).

When you make a manual uninstal of DirectX you put some files in the dustbin (principaly some DLL).
let them in few times, its a security for the restauration if you have an error about them after.

2) You can use some softwares do it automaticaly. Y have never use them, Y am not a good adviser.
You can find free software in Intetnet.

I hope your are luky as much me with this solution ;-)

Hi GLorenzo,

You can also try out the directxbuster website..it might be the best option to try out before you rebuild your system to dump on the DirectX8.1 runtimes..

I think it's something like

or something (do a google)
