I finally got my first computer to load a win98 CD which i had but found that the prod key code i had was not good for the CD. I found a upgrade CD with a matching code but now find that I can't get past the requirement that i supply code for the earlier, wrong CD. Just how can I get both to match. I will not be able to get the code for the now loaded win 98. I thought I had this first time bootup licked..not yet, but I will! Thanks, Tybee

Have never found that you need the earlier code. May be how you are installing. What versions are you using and how are you installing? Ed Fair

Edfair, Hope i can explain this right. I used win98 the first time and it would not complete loading without code. I got that far from a disk downloaded from program written to help me load the OS. This enabled me to load virtual drivers to HD so CDROM would read windows. I am not studied enough to explain this clearly...i'm new at this.
I have built my first computer and want to load the OS. I find myself stuck on the loading part.

Ok, I don't quite understand exactly what's happening, but it sounds like you have a full Win 98 CD but with the wrong code and an upgrade with the right code. You can't use the code for the upgrade on the full version and you can't install the upgrade unless Windows is already installed. If I were you I'd simnply go to an auction site like e-bay and buy a full copy. Don Swayser

Hi Tybee,

you say you found the Win98 CD, where exactly did you get it, and was there a product key on the back of the CD??
Once you have the Win98 cd, any product key should work with it, as long as it is the same version. Do you get an error when you enter the Key?? Was it telling you that it was an invalid product key? Jay~

Swayda, you're pretty much right. I do have a full win 98 and NO code and an upgrade with a code...also 98. I believe the full version came with the purchase of a new system but I don't think I got any product key code with it. The computer was assembled by a local, legitimate computer company which probably gave me the code; i'll go back to the office and look around. I do have Win 2000 with code but my applications won't work properly with it so says the manufacturer.
KeyTech, the message is that code is invalid.
Guess my best bet is to go find a good code for win 98. I should have one at office. So i just need to load a good code to make it work...sounds simple enough. I am hopeful that from this i will get a better understanding of how to load a built computer with OS. Know any step-by-step instructions?

Reghakr....so you're listening huh...okay I can see that you're someone who knows about these things. Speak o' learned one!

Some had the code on the face of the manual. Some OEM versions had a very small sticker on the back of the jewel case.
I think that most who habitate here would recommend that you get a 98 boot bisk , boot with it, select cd support, move to the cd and run setup. Probably best to run format and reboot before you run it. Ed Fair

First, you don't need a code for the first CD. After formatting the hard drive, you insert the upfgrade CD. It will then ask for your full version CD to verify you are eligible to use the upgrade. It doesn't ask for a code, just verifies the CD is a full-version

Why spend two days here when you may "have one at office"?

The others have told you all conceievable places where the code may be located. We don't hand out product codes here, so I don't know what else we can do for you.
