How do I Swap Extension numbers

I currently have a BCM400 system. I want to move about 20 employees from their existing digital phones over to IP sets. How can I move their existing extensions over to a new IP phone? Do I plug in the new IP phone first, let the system assign it a random extension first? Then got into the BCM Elements software and do what? Any assistance is appreciated.
 
That's the easiest way. But be careful with DN Changes, it affects for than you think. If you do it, make sure you look at all details of the programming to make sure everything was put where it needed.

Doing it that way will only change the extension number but won't assign features, lines, hunt groups, ring groups, answer DNs, etc that are currently on the digital sets. What I do is unplug the digital set, wait for a few minutes and keep refreshing the Element Mgr Active Sets page until the digital sets no longer show up as active (calling the extension a seems to speed this up, when it says "inactive" you're ready - takes 5 minutes or so.) While you're waiting you can be preparing the IP set. When the IP set requests a new DN, you can just assign the DN of the digital set you unplugged if it is shown as inactive in EM. All the line assignments, hunt groups, ring groups, answer DNs, etc and most button assignments will be transferred to the IP set. Some buttons i.e. the message button may need to be reprogrammed as the key locations don't exactly allign with the digtal sets. Using this procedure I've been able to replace 8-10 sets in less than an hour with no mistakes.
 
OK, so we are finally moving forward with this project. And I can't seem to get the steps above to work. I got the ext. moved, but the lines assignments and buttons did not move. Oldestgeek can you give me more details on this process?

So far I tried:

1. unplugged the existing digital set.
2. Plugged in the new IP set (the BCM gave it a random extension)
3. I waited for the old (now unplugged set) to move from Active set to the inactive set list.

Now what? Where do I modify the DN number?

There was no need to assign extensions to the IP sets first. Do not do a change DN - that will be just like programming the extension from scratch and the only thing carried over to the IP set will be the DN. Just de-register the the IP set, unplug the digitals and when you can dial them and get the inactive DN message, those DNs can then be assigned as the new DN of the IP phone and all line assignments, line pool access, Answer DNs, restrictions, etc will be carried over to the new set. Features and auto dial programming won't be kept, instead it will use the default button template that is set up for that model phone.
 
One other quirk of trying a DN change - if you have autodial buttons set up on other phones, say a receptionist's phone, for the changed DN, it will no longer work after the DN change. Even though it is programmed by assigning an internal autodial to that DN, after a DN change the key is still associated with the hardware ID, i.e. port of the original set. If you press the adl key it will still try to dial the same set that it did before, not the new set with the old DN.
 
I think I am missing something here. I have the digital set unplugged from the system. I have the IP set "de-registered" but still plugged in. The IP set is asking for the password to connect it to the system.

When I call either set, it displays "Not in service"

The digital set still has the old extension that I want to move to the IP set. Can you tell me what the next step is?

The password for the phone is BCMI. In order for the phone to NOT automatically assign a DN you would have had to go into Element Manager under Resources - Telephony Resources, click on IP&app Sets. In the field below it will show a check box that says Auto DNs... uncheck it. Then when you plug the IP set in, it will ask you what DN you want the phone to be.

The password is whatever you have set in the password field on the IP Sets tab under telephony resources. While there, turn off "automatically assign a DN" as suggested.
 
Wow. Thanks alot guys. I knew I was missing something. I couldn't figure out how to assign a DN without using the EM. Now that I unchecked Auto DN, it now prompts me on the phone.

I really appreciate your help in this. Thank you very much for the assistance.

Now just to ask another question....What if I need to go from the IP set back to a digital set?
 
Unless you can punch the appropriate port on the required outlet yourself, call in a tech.

Most systems won't have problems with change DNs, but it is major trouble if you have DIDs configured on extensions.

What I usually do, is copy/paste data from the old/configured set to the new set, and then change DNs, and then go over all the settings where I need to readjust programming. I never let a customer or junior tech do it for obvious reasons.

Remember though, that change DNs won't follow in these 2 instances (mainly, but many more!!): quick dial buttons (say at the front desk) and CCR tree transfer nodes, which could be important...!
 
I appreciate everyone's assistance. I figured how to swap the existing DN's to the new IP phones. This new office space is going to be temp space while we have some work done to one of our floors. So, I will eventually need to switch them back to regular digital sets.

Can anyone help me with switching DN's from the IP set back to the digital set?
