I've got a new laptop which is running an Atheros 5700 wreless card, and it finds and connects to my wireless network no problems, but after a few minutes you have to renew the connection because it looses internet connectivity.

The signal strength from the AP is max, and the connection speed varies between 36 and 54Mb. The card still shows a connection but you just cant browse.

The laptop is running XP. We have 2 other laptops in the house that can use the same AP and they have no problems at all, even when both are connected. The Atheros drops out even when it's the only one on wireless.

Any suggestions appreciated.

Check that any power saving options for the card are disabled.

Does this laptop lose connectivity when it's in exactly the same location as the other laptops? E.g. If the other laptops are upstairs, and this one is downstairs in the kitchen, maybe someone using the microwave oven, or a cordless phone is causing interference to the received WiFi signal.

other laptops in same room one is right beside it.

Power save and sleep modes are disabled.

I have tried turning off the Atheros management and using windows to mange it but the result is basically the same, after a short period it drops out.

I have tried to see if the time frame is the same each time and it doesnt seem to be.

At least under windows management I simply do a repair and alls good for another 5 or 10 minutes, but is is frustrating.

Does it drop connection if you run a continuous ping on an external IP?

Check you're using the latest drivers for that Atheros wireless card...

have started it pinging now, so will see how long it stays up for.
