They've elected me at work to attempt to stop one person's DSL connection.

We have to have it run with LAN, but, i dont know how to drop the DSL without just unplugging the cable...

He has to have that cable plugged in though because he needs access to the network, and noone wants to call the sys admin to tell him to pull him off because then he'll know the internet has been abused...

Any help would be appreciated, because i'm lost...

In many DSL routers you can block access in the router.

in his PC, either pointing his gateway to a different IP address or setting his net mask to 0.0.0.0 should block internet til he notices.

(in my firm it is a HR issue, (your job is at stake) not a sys admin issue) I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

Your router that connects to the ISP may have filtering and/or firewall capabilities built in. If so then you can use that to block access for a particular user by their IP address. Or if he gets his IP via DHCP, you may be able to block his access by his hardware MAC address. I'd look into that since that can be done without any need to do anything on his computer.

However, Maxpipeline's method will probably have to be actioned by your sys-admin - I'm sure the router's settings will have been password protected. <marc>[ul]help us help![li]please give us feedback on what works / doesn't[/li][li]not sure where to start? click here: faq581-3339[/li][/sup][/ul][/sup]

Open Internet Explorer and click Tools>Internet options>Connections>Lan settings> check box "Use a proxy server for your Lan" address= 10.10.10.10 port=8888 check box "Bypass proxy server for your lan" "never hack a crack for he may crack and hack back"

just block IP addresses/computer Name from Server, you can do that by wingate...

Sorry, wrong thread. Thanks manarth.

Rather than a thread I will rewrite my scattered thoughts on this.

There are three programs of cost between free to very modest you can use to limit or shape bandwidth:

1. NetLimit, While in beta I know this work s very well, and works remotely. It is free.

2. Nimbus, This product has been folded into their other commercial packages now. It is free. This company has a lot of experience in bandwidth control and shaping.

3.
Of note, and of reasonable cost, is the Sygate product: but it seems a pretty involved way to go except in large networks. Finally, there is Packateer, and it is the only way many Univesity sites have been able to survive Kazaa. Pricey.

The best practices way to go would be to:

1. Clearly, in writing, tell the users what programs are not permitted on the LAN.

2. You can use the free utilities from to remotely monitor the processes being run from a user machine. If you see a process called Kazaa, eMule, eDonkey etc. you could log it, or if you chose you could pskill the application remotely with the proper permissions. You can even scan all users from known processes. See the sysinternals site for more information.

3. Warn the user. If a user, in writing, receives a message that their system has been logged as running a forbidden application, and to cease and desist, it should prove very effective. At the least, it tells the user that you can tell when a forbidden application is run.

4. If that does not work you might have to consider termination.
