how do I sidestep a firewall that blocks AIM?

I would like to use AIM (or any equiavalent instant messanging service) on a system that has recently been somehow reconfigured to block AIM and Yahoo IM. I think it was a change in the firewall. Assuming the IT people do not want to help, is there anything I can do?

Have you tried using AIM Express?
