How do i set up DHCP so that i can have 2 subnets ?

we are growing past the use of this as it only allows for one network

I want all of our servers to have static IP Addresses in the 10.1.1.x range

and all the users to use 10.1.2.x as the subnet.
all users should use dhcp in this range

is this the best way to do this ? if so what is the best way to set it up. do i have to go to all the users and change the subnet mask ? how would i set up DHCP to keep all the traffic seperated ?

i was able to make 2 scopes but the problem i'm getting is that the 2 subnets are haveing problems connecting. i can ping other PC's in the other subnet but it doesn't register in DNS. i want both subnets to be able to talk to each other.

I think I misunderstood what you were trying to do.

Are the two different subnets are the same Network? Since you didn't provide a Subnet Mask I can't tell. If not you will need to Route between the 2 subnets.

subnet mask is 255.255.255.0. what i'm tring to do is that our main offices subnet is almost out of ip addresses and i wanted to split it by makeing 2 subnets on the same network, one for the servers and one for the DHCP scope her users to connect. On our server I made 2 scopes. when i have both active user can get an ip address from ether subnet but they can't communicate between the 2 subnets. i made them a superscope and i though that would work but it doesn't. i want to know how can i have both subnets talking running off the same server. i want one subnet for all the servers and one for all the users.

It doesn't sound like you have any routing in place between the subnets, you're going to need it if you want them to talk to each other.
The reason you can get an IP from either scope is the DORA process of DHCP is based on broadcast, you only have one broadcast domain as you only have one network so the clients can get an IP address OK but once they do then apart from broadcasts they won't communicate with devices on the other subnet.

Can the DHCP server even talk to the DNS server?

the DHCP server is also running DNS. We have 2 DNS servers and they can talk to each other fine.

Do i need a router or does windows 2k server have something in place to route between the 2 subnets since they are in the same network and the DHCP is running on the same server

You can change your sub-net mask to 255.255.254.0, which will give you 512 addresses. Basically combining the 10.1.1.x and 10.1.2.x addresses. With just changing your sub-net mask you will not need a router as it is one network. You can exclude a range of addresses for your servers and the rest will be available for your users. With this configuration you are running a single network which will NOT require routing.

Yes, I agree with MTGNet. Changing the subnet mask so that both the 10.10.1.X and the 10.10.2.x are on the same subnet will be an easier solution.

Star for you MTGNet...
