I have read and understand how to set up a vpn client, but I don't know how to set it up on the other end.

I have a small workgroup network - 1 xp pro and 1 win2k computer connected via a dlink dwl-900ap+ router (since sometimes a laptop is on the network). I do NOT have a server.

I paid for a static IP address through the local cable company. I want to access the xp machine from home via a vpn. I don't want to use rdp, since this computer has quickbooks on it and the store employees are ringing up sales, so I cannot take the machine over. However, I do need to get files from it while I am at home.

Any advice as how to set this up? I apologize if this is a rudimentary question, but I can't find anything on technet or microsoft.com.

thanks,
Julie

Can anyone tell me if you can even do peer-to-peer access via a vpn????

I agree, but access to this machine will be primarily at night after the store has closed.

He has nitwits who work for him and won't remember to log the computer off (while simultaneously not turning the computer off) so that he could RDP in.

an easy solution would be to change your router to something that has vpn built in I have used the Dratek router in the past and they work quite well in these situations they allow the vpn connection to the router not the pc once you have made the connection all you need is to access the shared files.
the dratek routers allow dial in access as well so you only need to have one the other end can be any connection to the internet.
