Hi,

A basic question, perhaps:

I'm always on the move and don't have an outgoing mail server for Thunderbird to log in to, so I can't send email (I can receive ok).

I'm running XP Pro so am I able to set my laptop up so that it acts as its own SMTP server? What would be the best way to do this? If not what are the alternatives?

Any help in enabling me to send email would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I have a backup gmail email account, which I can access via webmail (browser) when travelling or using a borrowed machine.

Google mail can also be accessed from mail clients via their mail servers (pop.gmail.com & smtp.gmail.com), so in my email client I have gmail set up as a secondary account, which I make primary when travelling.

I have set up my reply-to as my primary email account, so if people reply to a msg I sent via gmail their response still comes via my usual ISP, whick I can always receive.

Hi Jock,

This is not a bad work-around but it's not really what I'm after as this requires too much repeated admin (address contacts, backing-up etc).

I'm pretty sure I can set up localhost to send my email from Thunderbird, or use a third party mail server app to act as my smtp server......

Hmmm....just been thinking about this a bit further and it actually might make some sense. I will look into this, Jock. Thanks!

Thanks, Smah. Will look into this.

In the meantime I have actually followed Jock's advice and it all works rather well.

Thank you both.
