How Do I Run Samba on Different Subnets?

(IP addresses have been modified to protect the innocent. All machines are located in the same room. The differing IP's come from the school I work for and all computers go through the computer information systems department in the building.)

I have 2 Windows 9x machines on 65.23.98.???. They see each other in the Network Neighborhood.

I have another 2 Windows 9x machines on 65.23.92.???. As expected, they also see each other in the Network Neighborhood.

Unfortunately, the Windows 9x machines in 65.23.98.??? do not see the Windows 9x machines in 65.23.92.???.

The fifth machine is running Red Hat 7.3 with Samba 2.2.3a. That machine has IP address 65.23.98.???. As we expect, the Windows machines beginning with 65.23.98.??? see the Linux machine running Samba but not the machines with IP address beginning 65.23.92.???.

My question is how do I configure Samba so that all 4 machines can see the Linux-Samba machine?

Your not going to be able to see the computers in the different subnet in Network Neighborhood, but that doesn't mean you can't connect to them. If your running WINS, then add the Linux servers NetBIOS name to the WINS database. If your not running WINS, you can alternatively set up an lmhosts file on the Windows machines on the different subnet.

You can always connect to any machine using its IP address, regardless of what subnet its in...

In Windows...

net use K: //192.168.1.15/share

In Linux...

mount -t smbfs //192.168.1.11/share /mnt/smb

Thanks for the advice. It is as I suspected. My admin was nice enough to put all our computers on the same subnet after I explained to him what we wanted to do.
