How do I replicate to a DC only once a day?

We need to build a DC offsite for Disaster Recovery purposes. We only want to replicate data to this once a day over night (3GB) over a 2mb lease line. How would we do this? Promote a member server locally first then move out to the offsite location?

Thanks

S

u need to set up another AD site for this server and configure the site repl interval for replication at night, that's it. before move to offsite location, throw in the LAN for a dcpromo and full replication.

how big is your ntds.dit? if too big, suggest u to install from media.

Hi the NTDS.dit file is 80mb it will be using our 2mb lease line over night.

80m is ok, repl won;t take repl all 80m, it's incremental replication, say 200-800k normall in ur case, so u are safe with 2m lease line. the first time, it will repl 80m, which might take longer time, say 20-40min.

Might be better off with Doubletake from NSI for the data portion, does byte level replication, only the changes to files, your line is not big enough to do 3 Gig over night. The Ad replication portion is OK.

Sorry it's only the AD side I need to replicate (80mb). If our DC goes down in our main site (we have 2 DC's) for any reason then we just want to be able to use this 3rd DC (global catolgue) to run things until we get another one up and running (dc promo a meber server). Should this be ok?

Sorry for the scare, miscalculated the time for 3 gigs...

That should be fine, 80 Meg is a drop in the bit bucket for a 2 Meg line. The AD replication will produce little data across the broadband line anyway, as Benlu points out the AD replication in Windows 2003 only transmits changes to AD.

cool, it's a lease line too so it's a 1-to-1 ratio and 2mb each way connection.

Do you now how I "set up another AD site for this server and configure the site repl interval for replication at night"?

Why have it replicate only at night ? Replication bandwidth used by AD will be minuscule after the initial synch. Aside from this, changes to AD should be replicated to other AD servers as soon as possible. Just taking a guess but probably the normal replication will probably involve a few hundred kilobyte at a time, if you make changes to AD, after the initial synch.

If you must......
For Individual servers..
"Active Directory Sites and Services" MMC, within "sites", double click on "Default First Site Name", "Servers", double click "NTDS Site Settings", "site settings" tab, "change schedule"

For all DCs involved....
basically the same but go into the "Inter-Site Transports", chose the transport, basically same as above, such as the "IP" tab, "DefaultIpSiteLinks", double click, "change schedule"
