I would rather use the boot.ini file to load up Linux opposed to the Linux interface. I'm new to Linux, and have just installed Mandrake 9.1. Any Links or assistance would be greatly helpful.
Which boot loader are you using now - lilo or grub? By boot.ini I assume that you're referring to the windows boot loader? I don't think there's any way to do this.
Okay figured it out, what I needed to do is:
1. boot up Linux, make a bootable floppy there.
2. Then I installed Recovery Console from the Win XP disk by doing a Start, run, Cmd, then typed in the CD Drive:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons, it installed.
3. Rebooted the machine and selected windows from the Lilo, selected Recovery console from the Boot.ini file. 4. From there I inputed all my administrator details for Option 1, C:\Windows directory.
5. From the Recovery Console DOS Prompt entered "Fixmbr /device/harddisk0" no brackets when typeing it out.
6. Told it Yes, go ahead and fix the Master Boot Record.
7. Rebooted the PC and it came directly up to the Microsoft Boot.ini script. And I have the boot disk if I want to boot to Linux.
jaywynn, glad you got it, but you made it a little more difficult than necessary. You can just inunstall Lilo from within Linux without going through the windows recovery console. Instructions here:
