Using MS Windows 2000 Server on an HP Netserver LC2000.
Embedded NIC failed & bypassing it with a PCI LAN card .
Server has lost its Domain/Network settings & Icon, but attached PC's still have their IPS.
How do I set up the Network again & do I have to change the attached PC's PC IP's etc???
Can anyone point me to a Net article on this topic??
Thank You

If you are replacing one NIC with the other, did you migrate the IP settings of the embedded NIC to the new NIC?

There's nothing to it. Note the IP/DNS/WINS/etc config of the failed NIC, then disable it. Install the new NIC and give it the same settings that the old NIC used. There is no need to redo the domain or re-IP the network.

I would go into bios and disable the onboard nic so the OS doesnt even see it anymore also.

Thank you for info so far. I am having a crash course in setting up LAN's. Hence my query re Kmcferrin response - where you say, "Note the IP/DNS/WINS/etc config of the failed NIC". where do I find that info?

Do an IPCONFIG /ALL. Or you can right click on My Network Places, then Properties, then right-click on Local Area Connection, then Properties, then in the list window scroll down to Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), highlight it, then click the Properties button. The settings that you want can be read or set through this screen.

Attn kmcmcferrin - followed yr advice with following outcomes:

When I right click on 'My Network Places" Icon I only see a "Make New Connection Icon". Cannot find an Icon or link for "Local Area Connection"

IPCONFIG/ALL gave me a Host Name, a Primary DNS Suffix and Node Type = Broadcast
IP Routing Enabled: "No"
WINS Proxy Enabled: "No"

Wld appcte it if you cld point me to what I shld do next to find the IP/DNS/WINS/etc config of the failed NIC.
If I need to Enable IP Routing & WINS Proxy, how does one do that?
Many thanks for yr assistance

It sounds looks like the connection has been removed/deleted. If that is the case then you'll have to get the info from another source. Hopefully you keep a spreadsheet or other record of statically assigned IP addresses? If not, you might be able to get the IP address from DNS (from a command prompt type NSLOOKUP YOURSERVERNAME). Then you can get the WINS/DNS/subnet mask/default gateway info from another device on that same subnet.

Ok, will try DNS method.
The network is an HP Netserver LC2000 with 2 clients.
Should I have IP Routing & WINS Proxy enabled?, & if so where do I do that?
Thank you for your guidance.

Typically you wouldn't, but that would depend entirely upon how the server was being used.

Hi G24
The problem you here describe might be caused by that you still have the config for the card - but it is inactive - have had several of these problems where a powerfailure caused mesh in the registry and made problems with the enumaration of the cards - I think this KB article might help you:
- read it carefully - print the article and do it step by step - and do not panic - but if it is not a DC a simple repair of it might also solve your problem (not the normally used repair when you a booting up on the install CD but the repair offerede when you initiate a re-install of the OS just before it is re-formatting the filesystem - there it won't chage the current installed applications and users but re-install the OS - this will solve most weird problems in an hour which can take weeks to find the cause for)

regards /ti

ps: wins-proxy, ip routing etc isn't components which are related to your problems - or at least what I can guess from what I have read in this thread
