How do I NOT embed fonts in a PDF

GOAL: To produce a PDF with NO embedded fonts and have the fonts list in Properties empty

To do this in AI 10, I would SELECT ALL, the FLATTEN TRANSPARENCY, and then print my PDF. No fonts show up in the PDF and nobody can edit a thing.

Tried everything in Indesign CS, and I can't do it. IT always sents the main fonts to the PDF, and I unchecked embed fonts - or I put NONE and put the 100% to zero.

It still embeds fonts? AND on top of that I tried, SELECT ALL in the Indesign CS and CREATE OUTLINES. Everything is converted to outlines. Print PDF & try EXPORT PDF and still fonts get sent.

I'm lost. Why would you not want to embed/subset fonts?

I just have to.

I was able to do it in AI, but I can't do it in Indesign.

I can't find where the execution is for FLATTEN TRANSPARENCY. I can see CREATE OUTLINES, but they are different things.

Flattening transparency creates rasterized output. Are you saying that you are rasterizing your type? This is why the fonts are not embedded in Illustrator - - - you've turned them into bitmaps.

...nobody can edit a thing

Is this why you don't want to embed fonts? There are other ways to protect the PDF content.

Good point about keeping individuals from editing the document. Do you have a full version of Acrobat 5 or 6? There are security features that can be enabled on the PDF side where the document can't be edited.

My Illustrator skills aren't the best, but I'm in an environment where I have to lock/protect documents from editing as well.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for responding.

>Flattening transparency creates rasterized output.

Actually no, in Illustrator 10 you can set the meter at 100% and it vectorizes everything that has been SELECT ALLed, when you hit FLATTEN TRANSPARENCY. I also no it hasn't been rastered because when I soom in super close to the PDF it is vector for sure. The fonts generally look darker onscreen when I do this, but on print output they look how they should.

Ive tried everything in Indesign CS now, and it ALWAYS imbeds some of the fonts. I even select EMBED FONTS - NONE. I even went to my Acrobat Pro 6 settings deep in the menu from where in CS you go to PRINT - PDF - Set all the Indesign settings, then FURTHER go into PDF settings and I added ALL the fonts to the NEVER EMBED list, and it still embeds them.

>Is this why you don't want to embed fonts?

The MAIN reason is I don't want them in the list so nobody can see the fonts that were used. Even if you protect it against editing, you can still see what fonts were used in the design process.

The way I did it in AI 10 was perfect, NO FONTS were in the list. It printed out OK. It didn't look as crisp on screen but I didn't care.

I don't know why Indesign CS doesn't have the capability to stop the font embed. Technically it should not embed anyting when I do SELECT ALL then CREATE OUTLINES, but for some reason it still does, even though everything appears on screen as if it were vectorized.

Could you try exporting an EPS or PDF from InDesign and opening it in Illustrator to clean it of embedded fonts?

I'm still lost as to why you don't want anyone to see the names of fonts. There may be other ways you can protect your content. I do not see anything wrong with revealing font names. It is no challenge to identify fonts visually ( Any vector image format like PDF can be hacked to extract or manipulate contents. If you are truly phobic about someone digging into your design, export as a JPG file. This will prevent your viewers from printing hi-resolution designs and from determining which fonts that you used.
