I'm a Linux (VERY) newbie. I have a Novell/WindowsNT network running IPX and TCP. I just loaded Corel Linux and now want to get network connection. My Linux Machine has an SMC8416 NIC. What do I do now to setup the Linux to connect?
Alright,
Can you tell me a bit more about your system. I prefer RedHat, can you open a terminal session in Corel. Type the command lsmod (list modules) can you tell me what this lists. Type more /etc/hosts. TCP first. Tell me what these two commands list.
Here is the results to the commands lsmod & more /etc/hosts
lsmod
module size used by
sound 56616 0 (autoclean) (unused)
sound core 2412 3 (autoclean) (sound)
sound low 252 0 (autoclean) (sound)

more /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 Local Host
192.168.42.15 Corel Linux Corel Linux

Whatever this all means.....??
It looks like your network card is not setup. you need to load a module for it. if it is ne2k compatible try loading the module ne.o or ne2k.o

goto this directory /lib/modules/net/ I think

insmod ne2k.o
insmod ne.o

or try something that resembles your card.

tell me what you get then

maybe errors like some conflict rubbish this means you will have to rebuild your kernel but Corel is pretty user friendly so it should not be too much trouble

easyer thing to do is put form any where in the console session, modprobe ne2k

this sould load the module and any other modules required.

With corel though before doing anything do an autodetect, this will then load the card module everytime you reboot to run a autodetect, i really boot into console from the boot menu , then put in the password for root and type the command;

detect probe

or if first you want to see wheather your card is being seen type ;

detect list ( this will only list to the screen and not altor any files that it might need to do)

if your mouse is a serial not ps2 then typing the first command with give your mouse back within X windows! try this see weather it does it, after trying these commands reboot with the command;

reboot

then choose console again and this time when it prompts you press control and D together this will tell it to start normally but you should beable to see if your card has been detected by looking for something like

ne2k(maybe diffirent) clone found ("realtec 8042" etc... this is only an example but it should load your card up, under control panel in X windows if you look though there under information and look at the devices see if you can spot it in there, if you think it is then set your network settings under network TCP/IP this can be dhcp or manual assigning of the ip addess. hope it helps!!
