I have my main form record set up as a department in a drop down list (combo box) based on a table. The subform then produces the relevant records for the dept selected and asks the user to edit one of the fields. Once the user edits the subform field the main form field is also edited (the main form record replaces the first record in the table that the main form is based on). If I do not allow edits on the dept field then my dropdown box doesn't work!! How do I lock my main form but allow records to be selected?

I suspect the main form and the subform are looking at the same table ????
So if you change the values in the table everything that references that table is changed.

Or you have something else going on DougP, MCP

Your problem is probably the dorpbox is basetable 'conrol source'. Just create a 'selector' combobox, which isn't basetable. With this combobox you should be able to 'jump' across the records. Goto the record which is needed and allow editing.

For monkeyproofness...

Disable and/or lock all controls except the 'selector' combobox, the subform and others the user should be able to use.

Grtz,

DougP: I have made the main form, sub form look at different tables but the first record is still edited..

Kalin: Your suggestion works. It was the dropdown combo box that was editing the table..

Thanks to both of you
