how do i list the contents of a magnetic tape??

how do i list the contents of my magnetic tape i am working on sco unix version 5
when i tried to give the command
tar tv /dev/rStp1
it checks the floppy disk drive
but when i ry to back up with
tar -cvbf /dev/rStp1
it takes the backup
please give the commands to list the contents of the tape and then to restore the contents of the tape;

help is needed urgently

You can either modify /etc/default/tar to point to the scsi tape or use tar tvf (you used tar tv which points to the floppy).
try man tar to see the possibilities. Ed Fair

tar tvf /dev/rct0

to view contents of tape.
