I have my bootable linux cd in the cd rom and I hooked up a scsi drive but all it does is go...

Time-out failure while waiting for SCSI input command

Rescanning SCSI devices.....

With a SCSI controller I aslo go an error,
No SCSI boot device
SCSI bios not installed

Any tips on this?

Thanks in advance.

1. " Time-out failure while waiting for SCSI input command
Rescanning SCSI devices..... "

Where does this error appear? Also, when your SCSI controller does its device test, make sure that your drive is detected and listed.

2. This is not an error. It just means that the SCSI controller didn't find any bootable devices attached to it. Only when a bootable device is found, will the SCSI controller remap the motherbord's BIOS boot code with its own to allow booting from a SCSI device.

Change your boot order in your BIOS to be

Floppy
CDROM
Hard Drive
SCSI card (if possible)

This way it doesn't require a bootable partition on the hard drive(s) to allow the CD to fire up.

Does the drive need to be formatted? If so, how do I do that?

Do most newer mother boards support scsi controllers and scsi drives?

What is a "SCSI input command"?
Time-out failure while waiting for SCSI input command
Am I suppose to type a command?

1. "Does the drive need to be formatted?" All new drives need to have partition(s) created and formatted before use.

2. "If so, how do I do that?" That depends. Seeing as you are trying to install Linux, you can do so during the installation process.

3. "Do most newer mother boards support scsi controllers and scsi drives?" As with most other add-on devices all motherboards that have a free PCI slot can have a SCSI contoller added on.

4. "What is a "SCSI input command"?" With SCSI, your system only tells the device what to do (input command) and the device hadles the request. Multiple commands can be sent to the device and be queued. Unlike PATA (Parallel ATA) HDDs, your system had to do all the work, hence the overhead to your CPU during large read/write operations.

5. "Time-out failure while waiting for SCSI input command. Am I suppose to type a command?" There is nothing that you can do. This indicates that an input command has been sent to the device but no reply has be received. This might indicate that the device is faulty; bad sectors etc that take too long to process and time-out.

If you haven't partioned and formatted the drive(s) it is quite likely that you will such errors
