On Windows XP and earlier systems, I could get programs to start whenever I started the machine, by putting them into a 'startup' menu within the start menu.

For Windows 7, this does not exist, or at least I cannot find it. I also cannot find any replacement function: Windows Help on Startup does not mention it.

Right click on "All Programs" select "Open All Users" and scroll down to "Startup"

Create a shortcut there.

OR you could open regedit, navigate to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

and add a new string key that holds the path to the application.

Oh! By the way

If you are unsure what regedit is ....

... It would be best to leave that one well alone :D
