I'm using Windows XP, with Service Pack 2 upgrade, and I can't for the life of me burn CD-R or anything else for that matter. My machine is a Compaq Presario.

I get every tune ready for burn and an air message pop-up says, "insert disk" and the disk IS inserted. I reinsert and it says that it may not have enough space available (it's a brand new CD-R) or that my disk may not be compatible with Windows? I've tried burning on my F drive to no avail :((

What gives? My Nero software won't burn my CD's either.

Burning CD's has never been such a headache. I've tried everything. Even burning at low speed 4x. All are WMA files.

Could this be a registry problem perhaps?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

it could be your burner that is kaput!

if it doesn't recognize CDR/CDRW then try your burner in anotherPC to be double sure.
if it doesn't work then, go shopping for a new one :)

uninstall the cdr in control panel and reboot, when it comes back up it should detect and ask you to install the software, have your nero cd ready and reinstall.

also try going to nero's website & see if there are conflicts/workarounds for XP.

What brand of burner is it?

Might very well be a driver issue, I would go to the manufacturer website and get the latest, without relying on compaq or windows to get it for you

if that doesnt work, like they said, you might be kaput.

Try this:

Create a simple test file using note pad. Type your name in it and save it as TEST.TXT.

Place a new cd in the drive and try to save your newly created test.txt file onto it. Save nothing else, no folders, nothing.

If this works there is nothing wrong with the drive or the software. Perhaps you are trying to save too many tunes at once exceeding the capacity of the drive.

If this doesn't work--get a new drive and/or reinstall the software and try again.

Thank you all for the wonderful suggestions.

Yes, this is on a brand new burner, Toshiba, which comes with the highly tauted Nero Software.

I just bought this Toshiba DVDR CDRW CDR burner and replaced it with my old f drive that didn't work. My friend took my old f drive home to install it to see how it works for him. I haven't talked to him at this writing, but I will attempt the above suggestions.

Thanks again for taking the time to help me :)

Right-click on the CD drive Icon to access the Properties.

Under the Recording Tab make sure you have enabled "Enable CD Recording on this drive".

This allows you to copy files to the CD. You can only enable CD recording for one device at a time.

Make sure windows recognizes it as a CDR / CDRW drive. I have seen where a brand new device shows in Device Manager as a CDROM or DVD drive - no burning capability.
