I want to solve a problem with Windows not releasing drive letters after stopping USB drives. I have two Win2K systems. One does not have the problem and I wish to copy mountmgr.sys from it into C:\winnt\system32\drivers on the system with the problem. Trouble is that Windows won't let me.

I will have a Ghosted system copy handy before trying this so please don't concern yourselves with the possible dangers of what I am trying to do.

Does anyone know how to twist Windows' arm so that the desired file transfer can take place?

Put the file on a floppy and boot of the 2000 CD into the recovery console.

Alternatively, create a BartPE CD and boot to that with the file on a USB flash drive.

BartPE - available from:

Then be sure to get BOTH the driver add on and the software add on from:

Thanks lwcomputing. That is really useful information.

Now to see if the changing of mountmgr.sys cures the problem of the non-released drive letters. Windows did however start OK so the alternative mountmgr.sys is obviously compatible.
