How do I fade to transparency in illustrator 9?

I've got a white box that needs to fade to transparent - - It's positioned above an image. . . How do I do that?

What you need is called an Opacity Mask, it's in the manual and help under this heading.

Select two objects, the lower the target, the upper the mask. The upper will have your gradient.

Then from the Tranparency Palette Options button (>)
Select: Make Opacity Mask.

You will need two objects for your white faded box... a white box, and a gradient mask to fade it.

I'd write more but I've got to run.
Best of luck...
Sef.

It is alright to decorate construction, but never construct decoration. - Pugin, on Arch.
