I need to do some work outside of x-windows. I am using GNOME. How can I exit out of GNOME (x-windows). I have tried ctl-atl-backspace...it just takes me back to GNOME

I don't know which distro you are using, but most (if not all) modern distros have numerous virtual terminals that you can access using Cntl-Alt 1, Cntl-Atl-2, etc. On Redhat and Mandrake, the X-windows session is on 7, but just keep checking them until you get to the Gnome session again.

I am using Redhat 9.x. The problem I am having is that I need to install the new NVIDIA video driver. I have to do it from the command line but not via the command line while an x windows manager is running. So I tried the suggestion above but it stil tells me that I have to stop the x server. How do I do this in RedHat Linux GNOME???

Morsing is correct. Runlevel 3 or 1 will allow you to upgrade your video driver.

Hello
I'd just like to point out or to reinforce the value of having one's system boot to console by default rather than going directly into some x-session. Once there and after you run any of that deep low-level important stuff like video driver installation you can either start whatever window manager directly ( ie startkde, blackbox, xfce ) or use a login/display manager xdm, gdm, or kdm from where you can start any type of WM you have installed from the session menu and logging out brings you back to the login manager so you can test or use other WMs at will. Defaulting to console also gives you the opportunity to discover amazing speed by using text/ncurses etc based, console/terminal apps and switch between with your alt-Fkeys. Email, chat ( especially cool for troubleshooting help online ) ftp, telnet, rsynch, etc etc all work from terminal at extremely low overhead and just scream. It's really an education finding out just how little you really need a Gooey/WM.
