Greetings ~

We're experiencing miss-dialed calls to 911. It appears as if our end users are inadvertently miss-dialing when they're actually trying to process a long distance call. I'm thinking along the lines of having a route pattern to recognize the 911 plus the remaining 7 or 8 digits... the pattern is recognized, then a courtesy announcement given to the caller (call rejected)"the number you have dialed was not recognized - please chk the # & dial again.

Any assistance is appreciated

It depends on how you have your 911 Route Pattern set up but your idea probably won't work due to the 911 RP being set to route immediately as soon as it sees 911 dialed, not waiting on any additional digits.
Legally you need to be careful with ANY delay when 911 is dialed on purpose or not. If you feel that you still want to do it, you could set up and route to a mailbox recording that says something like "Your call will be forwarded to Emergency services in 5 seconds. If you do not want to call Emergency Services, hang up now." then have it wait 5 seconds before the call is forwarded to 911.
I would not recommend doing this because seconds count when it's a real emergency but it's up to you.

Change the access code from 9 to 8 for 'regular calls'. We had to do this on a large install (abot 10,000 users). Our misdials went down from 70 or so a day to about 3 per month. After that a good smack on the wirst with a ruler seems to work well after a few times.

Perfection is expected, Excellence is Tolerated

We also changed to 8 to dial out because of this reason. Dropped the misdials dramtically.
