How do I delete IP phone firmware? 2

Basically, there are 2 things that I want to accomplish.
1. Delete old IP phone firmware that are no longer in used. How do I do it?
2. We have a redundant failover system: main PBX with 10x SMGs. They are all CS1000E R7.5. I want to delete all the IP phone firmware completely out from the main PBX, so that the IP phone would skip/ignore the firmware version check when it connects to the main PBX. All IP phone firmware will be managed and controlled on the SMGs instead. Do I just delete them out based on the answer to question 1 above or is there anything else that I need to do like disabling the firmware check on the main PBX and how?

TIA

I'm not sure why you want to delete the firmware out of the main site, since that is where the IP phones eventually register. You do however want the firmware in the main and all SMG's to be the same. So in Element Manager do a firmware update on the main and all SMG's. Maybe I'm missing something else you are trying to accomplish. I just looked in EM and the only thing you can do is update it, not delete the firmware.

KCFLHRC,

You are correct that the firmware in the main PBX and all SMG's must be the same.
You should already be aware that we do not need to host the firmware on the PBX or SMG at all. Putting firmware on an external TFTP server is an alternative option, but not a very practical one for my environment with around 1000 phones.
You should also already be aware that if a firmware is missing from either the main PBX and/or SMG, the phone will just skip the firmware version check when it hits that system.

By maintaining the firmware on the SMGs only assuming that all the phones must power up to the SMG before got redirected to the main PBX, I can selectively pilot a new firmware on one SMG before rolling out everywhere. In addition, I can selectively upgrade firmware on IP Phones associated with one SMG, one SMG at a time as well.
In case you are curious, this proof of concept and practice has been working fine for us. But the pesky vendor technician keeps adding firmware back in the main PBX because they all assume that it MUST be there. I want to be able to do it myself to keep the hassle down.

Us technicians are a hard headed bunch and tend to do things the way we like. Still not sure how you are removing the IP phone firmware when there is no "remove" option in EM. But good luck with it. That pesky PBX Vendor will save your bacon one of these days, so go easy on him/her.

LOL. Sorry about the pesky technician comment.
I agree that I don't see how to do it in EM. It is stupid that we can upload new firmware via EM but not allow us to delete the old ones.
I am hoping to delete them via CLI or FTP program.

I see now why you want to do it and agree, you should be able to remove it. And do it through an FTP Server or on the local SMG. I personally have never had this come up but I do see the need to deploy it as needed. Let us know if you find a way.

Its been a while but I thought we FTP'd and just deleted the extra firmware.

Johnthephoneguy,

Can you provide more detail where do I FTP to and which subfolder the firmware are stored at?
Do I need a PDT enabled account to do this?

have you tried.

TPS Firmware
The TPS firmware feature enables the users to view, add, and delete
firmware files present in the master TPS (Terminal Proxy Server). You
can navigate to the feature from Software > IP Phone Firmware > TPS
Firmware. TPS Firmware is presented as a link in the IP Phone Firmware
web page. When you click the link, the Firmware Maintenance Web page
opens.

I didn't even realize that link was there...
Yes, this is what I need.

Thank you!

I had no idea that was there either. Just looked and saw that. Not sure I will ever have a need to use it but glad to know I can if needed.

Thanks Hawks
