How do I combine two 9Gb drives and Make them look like one 18G? Hi, I'm using Solaris 8 and would like to use my current 9Gb HD's and make them look like an 18Gb HD? Is this possible, if so, how do I do this?

Thanks

you can use soltsice disksuite which comes with solaris 8. it's on CD 2.

You will either need to have Sun Disksuite, which is free with Solaris 7 and Solaris 8 or buy the Veritas Volume Manager. If this is not higherend server, then Sun Disksuite works good.

Make sure to have right version and patches match for respective Solaris version.

There may be other freeware, but I have never used other than these 2.

A slice on a solaris machine can span upto a single hard disk only. A volume on Solaris can multiple hard slices that may reside on multiple hard disks. By default, solaris format utility can not create volumes.. that means, u need a volume manager package so that u can combine multiple slices on two hard disks and represent a single volume of 18 GB size..

As LAncer73 and BVSJ has correctly mentioned, U can go in for VxVM or Solstice disksuite.. Solstice Disksuite comes free of cost with Solaris 8 installation Cd's (Solaris Installation CD - 2 )..

VAritas Volume MAnager has got advanced features than Solstice which you may need in case of clustering.. and it can help you in increasing the availability of your file systems than that in Solstice..
