What I'm trying to do is take an image and make it a layer on another canvas that I'm working with.

I've exported the file and imported it, but the layer is blank.

I'm doing some minor graphics work and part of it requires me to add other images to it, and I seem to be struggling with this. All help is of course appreciated.

Open original and target photoshop document. Make sure that the size and resolution is the same in both - or posibly bigger size in target if necessary.

Select All in the original and Copy.

Create new layer in target PS document and Paste.

Thanks for the quick reply, I'm still doing something wrong.

I can select and copy the image, but how exactly do I make it show up on a new layer on another canvas?

How do I create a new layer in target PS document?

Ok here's what I've done.

On the image that I want to trasfer to another canvas:

Select-->All then Edit-->Copy...then I minimize that and go to the other canvas, from there I go Layer-->New-->Layer...Still blank, what am I doing wrong?

Thanks for helping, jmgalvin!

Actually, I figured it out, was making too complicated for myself,
thanks again for the help!

One thing - you might be copying a blank layer. In the origianl, make sure there's on one layer. If more than one you can Merge Visible on the Layer menu. Then Selct All and Copy

Don't bother minimizing, just move the first one aside.

Then, here's your steps: from there I go Layer-->New-->Layer...EDIT MENU - PASTE.

If the document that you want to paste into doesn't have anything else, you don't need a new layer. when you paste from one PS into another, a new layer is created.

Keep in mind that new layers are, by default, opaque so the new layer will hide stuff behind it. To control this yu can go to Window Menu/layers to open the PS layers window. There's a little slider at the top to control each layers opacity.
