i have created a domain with a w2k server and by mistake gave a wrong name to it. In NT4 is was easy to change, but i haven´t found the way to change it in w2k server.
any suggestions???
thanks
The best way to do this is to build another member server in the same domain (I'm assuming that this is your root domain)and dcpromo it to become a domain controller then demote the root server to a member and rename and create a new domain. Unfortunately if you have created user accounts etc these will be lost but on the bright side you will have 2 root doamins sitting beside each other which you can treat as 2 seperate forests and transfer the data between them once you have created an explicit trust between them.
A bit long winded but it will preserve you current server build.
First, if you have'nt installed active directory than just right click my computer and go to the tab that says network identification click on change and rename your domain.

If you have installed active directory than you have to run dcpromo again and remove AD from your server. I hope this is not the only server running AD. Because you will have to recreate the tree.

Please let me know how you resolve this.
Thanks to your answers.
I have tried the dcpromo and it has worked well. I already had some users but its better than to reinstall the server again. I could not try the option of installing another server because i don´t have any other machine!
This is correct, once you create a domain in Windows 2000 you can not change the name of the domain or the name of the servers unless you run dcpromo again on these servers and make the changes.
Ron Valkenburg
ronald.valkenburg@ey.com
<a href=
Would you need to do this if your Windows 2000 domain is abc.com which is the same as your domain web page that is hosted offsite, thus not allowing you to see your own web page from your internal network. Can I forward to my isp's dns, since my local will be invalid, even if the dns entry is the same?
