I have an instance of msde running on a machine.
The password was set with no idea what it is.

No EM - thinking i have to use osql.

You can use the OSQL command line utility & sp_Password.

See BOL for information.

You will need to be a member of SysAdmin or SecurityAdmin in order to change it without being logged in as it...

I used osql with -E (windows authentication) as an admistrator. This allowed me to go in. And from there I created a new sa called sa1. And used another machine with EM to have a nice interface.

Log in to MSDE Adminstrator screen if you have installed it
then connect to the database
there is a button called User config click on that and you well be able to change the sa password to your choose
Okay
good luck
