how do i apply an adjustment layer to only the next layer 2

is there a way to apply an adjustment layer to only the layer immediately under it, and not to any other layer that might be under it?

Straight from PS help menu:

To create a clipping mask:

Do the following:

Hold down Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac OS), position the pointer over the line dividing two layers in the Layers palette (the pointer changes to two overlapping circles ), and click.

Select the adjustment layer and press CTRL+G (Apple+G) to group the layer with the one beneath.

Alternately when creating the adjustment layer click the box that says "Group with previous layer"
