Hello, I'm using a no longer supported internet appliance running freeBSD and no one knows the password. I got some instructions from the company, but that's all they'd give me as it's no longer supported.
I was able to boot to single-user mood and change the root password, but I can't get to a login prompt to login as root. (the instructions say to simply reboot and then login as root) When you reboot it starts up all the services and stuff and then just sits there at the last service (starting local daemons: ups).
I tried telnet, rlogin, but both are just some sort of proxy service with no login.
How do I get a login prompt? is there a keyboard shortcut or something I can enter during boot up? I also tried 'su' while in single user mood but that didn't work either.
I need to change the ip on the box like now because of an isp change, but can't log in to the admin screen. Please help!

Sounds like it's hanging up trying to start the UPS daemon. The logon prompt should appear automatically after all daemons have been loaded. Try using Ctrl-C to skip the UPS start when it hangs and see if you get the MOTD & logon prompt.

CTRL-C did nothing. So is it hanging up on the ups daemon? hmmm.. seems to work fine, so I probably won't mess with it.
I actually managed to do it without having to get a login prompt, so problem solved even though the problem asked wasn't solved. I won't have access to it again for quite some time (it's in the next country) so I'll probably just leave it for now.
thanx!

actually, we have another box (same thing) at a different location, and this one doesn't run the ups daemon. and if I plug in the monitor I can see that it's just sitting at the last service run also.
You're supposed to login remotely through a web interface, but I'm just wondering how you would do it locally if you had to. There's no support on the box, so I can't just ask them. :)
I'm guessing they don't want you login in locally, so there's no login prompt at all?
