With CorelDraw and Fireworks when you highlight the text and run through the different fonts you see the text displayed in whatever style you are scrolling through.
I can't figure out how to achieve this in Photoshop.
I assume I'm not doing it right
Any help much appreciated

in 6 all you do is highlight the text and klick on the font dd menu. then use the arrowkeys 2 scroll throught your installed fonts.

I miss the font preview as well. FWIW I've got a free font viewer installed - it's small, simple, and shows a preview of all the fonts I have installed on my system. I have that open when I'm working with fonts in Photoshop. It's not a perfect solution but it works! If you want to download one try the CNET download page:

and follow the multimedia and design > fonts links

The scrolling feature with the arrows does not work. Instead, I use Paint Shop Pro to view fonts.

I have heard people use all kinds of crazy stuff for this. I once had someone tell me to use Microsoft Word to view the fonts. Um, yea.

The arrow keys on the pulldown menu works just fine for me. Highlight your text, click on a font then just scroll around with the arrow keys.

I hate doing it this way tho cause I have WAY too many fonts and far too little time. "Absorb what is useful, discard what is not. Add what is uniquely your own." - Bruce Lee - The Tao of Jeet Kune Do

Maybe it's something to do with the way I've got PS6 set up, but I definitely don't get a preview of my fonts until I have clicked on the font in the dd menu, by which time the dd menu disappears. This is why I use the font manager, which incidently is a really quick way of previewing everything that is installed on your machine at the same time, without having to muck around with the up/down arrows.

Ah, allow me to clarify.

Insert your text. Highlight it. Without doing anything else (text box still has active borders, etc), click on the font pulldown to open it up. Choose a font. Your text should change to that font. Now, that font should be highlighted, but the pulldown menu disappears. Try using the arrow keys to see if your font selection changes, therefore altering the highlighted text.

I have PS 4.0 here, but my personal license at home is PS 6. I just did it last night so I am going on memory. It might be that it just won't work for you, especially if you are on a mac, but it works fine in most apps that have pulldown font menus, at least for me.

I do hope this helps as I know how bad it can get tryin to grope blindly for a font... "Absorb what is useful, discard what is not. Add what is uniquely your own." - Bruce Lee - The Tao of Jeet Kune Do
