I recently went to a technology conference in Las Vegas and saw many companies running standalone applications via Internet Explorer/HTML. They were just as fast and were more well-utilized than, say, a VB executable. They were able to enter information, edit documents, etc. just as though they were in a VB application - no refresh on the screen, it seemed. How is this done? How are individuals using IE as the container for a multi-form application?

Check out ActiveX documents.
The do exactly what you are asking for.

Or just an ActiveX Control hosted in a web page maybe?

Or maybe you saw a .Net application of some sort?

Or maybe they were going back to the server for stuff, but not loading the page (seems like MS offers a small Java applet to do this)?

I've heard the same thing. Will .Net have the capabilities via ASP.NET to provide this type of seamless operation? I've also been told that there will be a type of "state" in ASP.NET that is currently lacking in ASP.

There doesn't seem to be a wizard in VS7, but that does not stop development of ActiveX documents in C++.
However that is another story if not familiar with C++.
