i have a mid-sized nt 4.0 domain with several BDC. how can i tell which DC my client stations authenticate to when they login? i have been unable to find a registry reference pointing to the authenticating dc.

i do not what to specify the dc via lmhost file, i simply need a way to find out which dc a client may authenticate to.

thanks!!

depending on what type of clients you have....you may be able to look at the %logonserver% environment variable to determine which server clients are logging in to. Doug

i know that will work for nt and win2k clients. how about win9x clients ~~ i don't think that environment variable is available.

HI.

I don't know of the "right" way to do it, but you can try a trick.

* Configure all login scripts with an additional line like:
call all.bat

This can be usefull for many other tasks that need to run on all clients.

* Make sure that login scripts are the same on each DC NETLOGON share.
* Enable "load balancing" using system policies.

* Modify the "all.bat" script on each server to be uniqe to that server, and add a line like:
SET DC=xxxx
Where xxxx will point to the server name of each server.

Another option to try is using KIXSTART - maybe there is an option there for identifying the server.
