I used to take my jpg and gif files to Adobe.com to optomize them. It would give you 4 versions each one smaller and you could pick the smallest that was still good enough. They no longer offer that service. How can I optomize pictures now.

When you want to save your image, choose save for web and it will bring up the window with the 4 little boxes so you can fiddle around with the jpeg and gif settings

Curtana is right except for one small detail.. you have to select the four up tab at the top of the "Save for Web" screen. Happy shrinking!

BcBlair: you can optimize images like this:

Photos always JPEG. Try different quality levels
and find a setting for low file size and appropriate quality.

Icons, Text, Business graphics always GIF.
GIF89a allows up to 255 colors plus transparency.
Never dithered (for more than 255 colors) because then the
file size increases dramatically.

You cannot give JPEGs to someone and ask him to optimize.
JPEGs are an end product. The JPEG compression (Save as JPEG)
can be optimized. ---Gernot
