how can i reproduce this effect?

i don't have any clue about how create this effect on this number. - I thought it was kind of 3D thing, but i am not able to reproduce.. please, help!!!

Looks to me like they used blends to make the intermediate steps. Should not be hard to do. Make copy. Cut copy at top and bottom. Move and copy left piece down and to the left. Select both original left piece and moved left piece, then make a blend. Repeat for other pieces.

I just played with it a bit, and I can't really find anything too complicated about it. You'll have to fiddle with the blends a little, but yes it's pretty simple. Looks like on the top black stroke there's an inner glow or drop shadow but that's small potatoes, too.

Here's a quick sketch, I only used blends and a blur around the top black number. Actually, I also used a couple of clipping masks to mask off parts of the blend that ran off at the top and left...

Now, why would you want to know how to make something THAT ugly?

thanks a lot!!!! i know it's an ugly artwork, but it's an old project for a brochure, and i must renew with 4-5 (at place of 3-4).. thanks again! i'll see to study!
