I have a list of names in a spreadsheet, however some of these names have an asterix on the end of the surname.

The names fields are made up of Surname, first names
So they look like this:-
[blue]

smith, neil
smith, michael
smith, michelle

etc.
[/blue]

However in some of the list, the surnames are followed with an asterix, and look like this:-
[blue]
smith*, neil
smith*, john
[/blue]

I have tried to delete the asterix, by using the find and replace, but this will delete everything, as it is taking the asterix to mean everything.

Can anyone give me a suggestion??

I dont want to delete them manually, as my list contains thousands of names.

Precede the asterisk with a tilde in the Find/Replace dialog box

eg ~*

A nice tip - thanks KenWright!

NB this tip also works for replacing the ? and ~ characters - you would write ~? and ~~ respectively in the 'Find What' text box.
